MKDDL U16 Division 2
Middleton Cheney U16 1-10 Linslade Galaxy U16 Boca Juniors
It was a mild, sunny but windy morning. Boca had a 90 mile round trip to play Middleton Cheney, near Banbury. The Middleton Cheney pitch was quite soft, as a result of a lot of rain in the week and also small for an adult pitch. The softness led to a bit of a bumpy and sticky surface for Boca to contend with.
Boca started the game well but Middleton Cheney were also competitive in the early stages. It was difficult for Boca to create space on the narrow pitch and also for Boca to pick their passes on the bumpy surface. Boca scored early, when Callum Scott linked up with Zach Theodorou and then Joe Carr down the left. Joe set the ball back to Callum, who shifted the ball to his left foot and then fired a superb finish into the top right corner, 1-0.
Boca the sustained a short period of pressure down their right side. Cheney were playing long balls and it took a while for Boca to adjust their defending in the windy conditions. On a couple of occasions, the ball bounced through the Boca defence and Cheney got in behind. On one of these occasions, Ano Parwaringira managed to sprint back and get ahead of the Cheney winger but Ano was pushed in the back and went to ground. The ref saw nothing wrong and Cheney crossed the ball into the box. From a position wide inside the right of the penalty box, the Cheney forward unleased a great strike, which flew into the top of net and left, goalie, Dan Ingram stranded, 1-1.
Boca immediately put this behind them and started a wave of relentless attacks. Boca had now adjusted for the pitch and conditions and they were moving the ball about well. Tom Alexander and Callum Scott had taken complete control of central midfield and were linking up with Joe, Zach and Jacob to create frequent opportunities.
A great move down the Boca left resulted in a cross from Joe with his right foot. The Cheney goalie came out to claim it but Tom nicked the ball in front of him and it fell kindly for Jacob to fire his finish into the roof of the net, 2-1.
The chances kept coming for Boca but they couldn't finish to grab a killer 3rd goal. Joe, Callum a couple of times and Zach a couple of times all had great chances to extend the lead.
Just before half time, Zach received the ball in a wide left position. He turned, beat two defenders and then slotted his finish past the keeper, 3-1.
It was now a comfortable lead for Boca but it could easily have had seven before half time.
In the second half, Boca came out of the blocks fast. Zach quickly added another 2 goals to reach his hattrick. The first a neat move with Joe threaded through down the left and then squaring the ball from Zach to finish. The second when Zach broke clear of the defence from a Callum pass and he fired a left foot finish straight into the top left corner from a narrowing angle, 5-1.
A 6th goal came from a Boca freekick, Callum lofted his freekick into the area. The ball was allowed to bounce and Harry Shore managed to get his foot to the ball ahead of the Cheney Goalie and dink it over his head into the goal, 6-1.
Boca were now having wave, after wave of attacks. Boca were playing out from the back beautifully, with frequent switches of play through Jacob, Harry, Tom and Will Gibson-Housden at the back. Bobby Forsythe on the right and Louis Woodford down the left were disciplined in keeping the width for Boca. This pulled the Cheney team out of shape and created gaps all over the place for other players to exploit. Josh Lane and Jack Welchman were now able to drop in to receive passes from the full backs or centre backs and then quickly pivot the direction of the attack. Frequent chances were now created, with Zach hitting the post on a few occassions, Joe having a chance whipped away from him on the goal line, Ano coming close twice and Louis coming close twice.
An attack down the Boca right, led to a fired cross, the Cheney defender stuck out a leg but diverted the ball past his own goalie, 7-1.
Zach was put through on goal, he rounded the Cheney defender and passed the ball into the unguarded net, 8-1.
Moments later it was Zach again, breaking clear down the Boca right, again rounding the goalie and finishing for his 5th goal of the game and 40th goal of the season, 9-1.
Late in the game, Zach went one better than he had done all season and grabbed his first double hattrick, this time Dan got the assist from a rare long goal kick, with Zach rounding the keeper again to cooly finish, 10-1.
Zach's 6 goals were the icing on the cake but the team had earned these for Zach by being determined and disciplined with their play. There was no complacency, everyone stuck to their task and they carried on playing good football from the moment they conceded to the end of the game, rarely giving Middleton Cheney a chance.
From back to front, Boca were superb. Dan's distribution in goal was fantastic, always looking to roll the ball out before the opposition could reset and helping Boca to build dangerous attacks from the back. Callum dominated the midfield, passing creatively and driving with the ball when space opened up. Jacob and Will were superb at fullback, they were always available for passes, switches of play, resets and Boca built almost all their attacks from the full back positions. Player of the match had to go to Tom. Tom was easily the best player on the pitch in the first half, he looked to play quickly, spread the play, drive into dangerous areas but also won the ball back quickly. At centre back in the second half, Tom was sharp, composed and quickly read any sign of danger, this meant than Dan did not have single save to make.
Boca now have 3 weeks off over Easter before they resume to play their final 3 league games of the season.
