A proud performance from Wanderers

Match report provided by Chris Jones

A sunny start to proceedings welcome us back to Giffard Park for our 2nd league game of the season against HEJ Greens. Shay returns from injury and is back in the starting line up but we’re still without Zach. It’s tough opposition today so we’ll face a stern test.

Great start from Wanderers with Deven smashing a shot over the keeper almost from kick off. An immediate response from HEJ’s 1st corner. A mix up at the back for HEJ and Deven sneaks in. Daisy is giving it her all in midfield, winning every battle. Shay is attacking his man on the wing every time he gets the ball. Ewans footwork is neat as he is threading passes through. HEJ are countering well with a high press which continues to leave us exposed. A free kick on the edge of the box is smashed in by Deven.

Into the second quarter and Theo steps into the middle with Albi on the wing, Miles in attack and Fred left wing. A competitive start to the period battling well, and Henry kept busy in goal. Wanderers come close to scoring, firing a cross across the box, so close! Theo’s footwork is incredible, creating opportunities for Miles. No break through as yet. A great double save from Henry prevented what looked like a certain goal. Incredible pace is required from Ewan, cutting out the threat down the wing. Both teams giving everything in this derby.

Alfie starts quarter 3 dominant in midfield, possibly with the pass of the match that Theo goes so close to converting. Henry’s is placed in defence this quarter and he looks so calm on the ball. Zonal marking from a free kick fails to prevent a HEJ goal. Almost immediately, Theo almost chips the keeper - so close, unlucky. Alfie sees an opportunity from distance, coming close to lobbing the goalie. Henry is playing like a man possessed at the back, winning tackle after tackle. Luca has a stint upfront late this period, working hard.

The final quarter starts with a third change of goalie for Wanderers with Miles taking a turn. We have the blonde hair warriors upfront this quarter with Daisy and Theo hungry for goals. Shay goes close early in the period and Fred’s strong tackling is helping to keep things tight. Ewan is feeding the ball up the wing every time keeping us dominant.  A goal for HEJ comes from nowhere.

Good footwork from Deven almost leads to a goal from Daisy. We’re getting close. It’s Albi this time that finds himself in the box, but the ball just doesn’t fall for a clean strike. Alfie then shoots from distance as the clock ticks down.

A performance to be proud of from Wanderers, much improved from our last visit.
