(Many thanks to Coach, Peter, for the match report)
CYFL U14 Division 1
Sacred Heart Youth U14 United 2 - 0 Linslade Galaxy U14 Lazio
It was deja vu for U14 Lazio this morning as for the second week running we made the trip to Sacred Heart, this time for a league fixture.
Both teams had early chances. Alfie nearly latched onto a through ball in the opening 30 seconds but was just beaten to it by the Sacred Heart keeper. Sacred Heart then went on the attack, won a corner and had an effort cleared off the line by one of Kingy or Joe, hard to see through the bodies, before the ball was finally smashed clear.
The game settled down into a reasonably scrappy affair, with both teams having half chances to take the lead. Lazio's best opening came from an under hit back pass which caused confusion in the Sacred Heart defence. At one point it looked like Theo would have an empty net to aim for but the ball just wouldn't sit down for him. Theo managed to square the ball back into the danger but Cyril and then Blake couldn't quite take advantage.
When the opening goal of the game came around 20 minutes in it was, unfortunately for Lazio, Sacred Heart that grabbed it. Lazio lost the ball in midfield after playing out from the back, then got caught out as the Sacred Heart right winger got to the byline and played in a dangerous cross that was tucked away. 1-0 Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart enjoyed more of the play in the run up to halftime but Lazio held firm. Abdul and Kiro were working well together down Lazio's left flank, while Adam and Oscar were similar down the right. A couple of half chances came Lazio's way in the few minutes before halftime, the closest being a long range effort from Jelani that the Sacred Heart keeper did well to tip away.
1-0 to Sacred Heart at halftime.
Lazio were instantly under pressure at the start of the second half with a flurry of well taken corners for Sacred Heart, several of which went across the face of the goal without getting that final touch.
Lazio were struggling to get a foothold in the game and were working hard just to keep Sacred Heart at bay. Tycho and Caelan were outstanding at centre back but couldn't stop the chances start to come Sacred Heart's way. Chris actually hadn't been overly busy in between the sticks for Lazio in the first half but he certainly was in the second, making several good stops, including a penalty save, after Lazio had shot themselves in the foot by giving a penalty away following a series of errors.
As the clocked ticked down the score remained at 1-0 and Lazio weren't out of it. Alfie had been causing problems all half when Lazio counter attacked and he had a couple of opportunities. The first one he made a strong run inside the box before hitting the side netting from a tight angle when a cut back to Jelani was probably the better option. The second one Alfie appeared to get taken out with a high boot when through on goal but the ref waived away the penalty appeals.
As we moved into the closing 10 minutes Tycho pushed into midfield and Adam slotted in at centre back. A couple of driving runs from Tycho nearly paid dividends and he was also unlucky when he got his head on corner but the ball was just too high to direct the header towards goal.
With a few minutes to go the game was effectively settled as Sacred Heart caught Lazio on the break and this time made no mistake with the finish. 2-0 Sacred Heart.
Lazio nearly gave themselves a lifeline by replying straight away. Alfie, who deserved a goal for his hard work up front, got on the end of a bouncing ball and lifted it over the keeper towards the empty net, only to see a Sacred Heart defender get back to acrobatically hook the ball away - it was, I'm afraid, that kind of 'nearly' day for Lazio.
The full time whistle blew just after, a 2-0 defeat the final score.
It didn't quite happen for us today and Sacred Heart deserved their win. That's the way it goes sometimes, we'll reset and go again next week.
This week's Gartec Player of the Match went to Chris for a string of fine saves in the second half. Well done Chris.
Andre and Steve were on lino's duty today, a much quieter morning for them than last week, but much appreciated as always.
