Flitwick Eagles U14 Golds 4 - 3 Linslade Galaxy U14 Lazio
This morning U14 Lazio travelled to Flitwick to face their bogey team from last year in a friendly.
To say Lazio started fast would be an understatement as they raced into a two goal lead within the opening 5 minutes. Firstly, Theo capitalised on some hesitation in the Flitwick backline to get on the end of a bouncing ball and calmly lift over the onrushing keeper. Secondly, Blake started a nice move as he strode out of defence to play a lovely ball to Josh on the left wing, who in turn found Alfie's run through the middle of the Flitwick defence before, in a similar manner to the first goal, lifting the ball over the advancing keeper and into the empty net. 2-0 Lazio.
Unfortunately, Lazio couldn't hold onto the lead for long and gave away two scrappy goals in quick succession, which meant that by the midpoint of the first half it was already 2-2.
The half had developed into a contrast of styles. Flitwick were more direct and causing plenty of problems with their long throws and corners, while Lazio were playing some lovely football, moving the ball out from defence into midfield and switching play from side to side. This nearly paid dividends as Joe, Chris, Jelani, Josh and Theo all combined for a great move down the left hand side which ended with the ball going agonisingly across the face of the goal without getting a final touch.
When Lazio did grab the next goal of the game it was from something a bit more basic. Josh knocked in a nice corner which was met by Theo with a thumping header to make it 3-2 to Lazio.
Again though, Lazio were unable to hold onto the lead for long, as Flitwick caught them playing out from the back and finished nicely to make it 3-3. Flitwick then took the lead for the first time five minutes from halftime as they bundled home an effort from a corner that wasn't properly cleared by Lazio.
4-3 to Flitwick the halftime score.
After a stack of goals in the first half, the second half was, of course, goalless.
Both teams had goals ruled out for offside - Lazio clearly had a very eagle eyed linseman - and both teams continued to create chances but couldn't take them as they did in the first half.
Caelan, in goal for Lazio today, made a couple of fantastic saves at full stretch to tip the ball round the post. He also did well on a number of corners, helped out by the back four of Kiro, Adam, Blake and Joe who were now getting blocks and tackles in on all the loose balls.
At the other end Lazio's efforts got closer as the half went on. Oscar had an early go from long distance that nearly cleared the hedge behind the goal. Alfie was next up with a crack that found the middle of the hedge behind the goal. Josh came a lot closer as he fizzed a dangerous free kick low across the face of the goal, while Blake came even closer with a header from a corner that went inches wide. There were actually lots of good positions that the likes of Cyril, Oscar, Josh, Theo, Jelani and Alfie worked but they just couldn't quite find that clear opening.
With no further goals in the half, a 4-3 loss was the final score.
Well played and hard luck to Lazio. The football was great to watch at times, first half in particular, and in general loads of positives to take from the game today.
The Gartec Player of the Match went to our skipper Blake, who stood in at centre back today and was fantastic in organising the team. Very well played Blake.
Very well played and big thanks to our two linseman also, Andre in the first half and Allan in the second.
