U14 LAZIO START STRONGLY BUT RUN OUT OF GAS

Philip Stanley3 Feb - 08:42

Lazio race into early lead but can't quite see the game out

(Many thanks to Coach, Peter, for the match report)

CYFL U14 League Cup, group stage
Bedford Park Rangers U14 Thunder 4 - 2 Linslade Galaxy U14 Lazio

This morning U14 Lazio made the journey to Bedford to face BPR in their latest fixture in the group stage of the league cup.

Having suffered two heavy defeats to BPR in the league Lazio knew they were in for another tough test today. And it was BPR that started confidently, having the first clear cut chance of the game in the opening minutes but Chris made a good one on one stop.

Lazio quickly grew into the game though and started to move the ball confidently themselves. Joe and Alfie were combining well down the left flank, and around 10 minutes in, this is where Lazio worked a chance to open the scoring. Alfie picked out Daniel's run down the left channel with a lovely ball, Daniel raced onto it before cutting into the box and firing a shot over the keeper into the top right corner. 1-0 Lazio.

Lazio looked good for the next 15 to 20 mins or so.

BPR were always dangerous but the back four of Oscar, Caelan, Tycho and Joe, with Adam and Kingy sitting just in front, were holding firm. The main scare came from a disallowed goal for BPR, correctly flagged offside.

Going forward Lazio were a real threat and regular chances were coming. Josh in particular was twice denied by the BPR keeper when in on goal, while Blake had a long range effort saved.

After around 20 mins Lazio managed to take one of the chances to double their lead. The ball fell to Daniel on the edge of the box, he sliced his shot but it fell perfectly into Alfie's path on the left hand side. Alfie took the ball in his stride and then slammed it home at the near post. 2-0 Lazio.

BPR applied the pressure in the run up to halftime. There were several half chances but nothing clear until just before the halftime whistle when a BPR forward was given way too much time in the box and he duly smashed the ball home from a tight angle to halve the deficit.

2-1 to Lazio was the halftime score.

Lazio knew they'd have to batten down the hatches in the second half and unfortunately they got off to a bad start when less than 5 mins in BPR had a penalty. Caelan had just made an outstanding recovery tackle on the BPR forward but as the ball ran lose he went in for another tackle and this time caught the player first. BPR dispatched the penalty to draw level at 2-2.

BPR were now generally controlling the play and Lazio were struggling to get forward as much as the first half. There wasn't loads in the way of chances though, and when the next chance did come, it was self inflicted as Lazio got caught playing out from the back. Chris made a stop from the initial effort from the BPR winger and there seemed a chance to clear the ball but in the end it was scrambled home to make it 3-2 to BPR.

At this stage it would have been easy for Lazio to fold but the boys dug in and found a second wind, enjoying their best spell of the half. Blake in particular got on the ball to hit a few lovely cross field passes. And one golden opportunity game along to grab an equaliser when Daniel burst through the centre of the BPR backline to race through on goal, only to be denied by the BPR keeper.

As we moved into the closing stages Lazio looked worn out from all their hard work and BPR took advantage of tired legs to pick up another goal on the break to make it 4-2.

Lazio kept going to the end and nearly grabbed a late third with a few half chances, Jelani in particular hit a a long range effort which for a second seemed to be looping in.

But with no further goals, the final score was a 4-2 loss.

Well done to the boys today. We might not have come home with any points but we gave a really good account of ourselves against a strong team and on another day, could easily have picked something up.

This week's Gartec Player of the Match went to Daniel, who played a part in both goals and was a constant danger man going forward, well done Daniel.

Not quite so dangerous, but still effective, was Tony R who ran the line for us today, big thanks for picking up the flag.
