In freezing conditions Spartak travelled to Wixams for a League Cup fixture. A late kick off and 3G enabled the match to go ahead, but Galaxy knew the match was going to be a tough one against the defending league and cup champions.
The game started evenly with both teams battling hard. Spartak’s efforts were rewarded in the 16th minute when there was excellent work from Luke W on the right. He cut the ball back into the box and Ethan hit it first time into the far corner.
5 minutes later Spartak we’re on the front foot again. This time it was the reverse with good work from Ethan; however Luke’s effort went high. Then, just one minute later, Wixams caused difficulties in the box and fired home from 12 yards to even up the scores.
The last 5 minutes of the first half Wixams were on top and had a 50/50 penalty claim turned away and then a curling shot hit the post. Galaxy were fortunate to end the half with the scores level.
Unfortunately the second half played out as the second ended with Wixams completely on top and Spartak unable to gain any possession or momentum.
Wixams were straight on attack, but skied a 1 on 1 in the first minute. However , a corner 1 minute later was cleared off the line by Kiro, but Wixams was on hand to head back into the goal 2-1
After 17 minutes a third goal for Wixams duly came with a cross from the left that was stroked home. Then 9 minutes later a long range curling shot hit the post and then unluckily the back of a diving Thomas to make score 4-1.
Wixams had further chances but poor finishing and a great save from Thomas blocking a one one one kept the score line to 4-1.
Not the start to 2025 that Spartak we’re hoping for, but with league action and the County Cup still to play for there’s lots to look forward to.
