MKDDL U14 Division 1
Linslade Galaxy U14 Spartak 5 v 1 MK Gallacticos U14 Spartan
The players warmed up in dreary conditions knowing that Gallacticos is a dangerous side despite their current lowly league position and that they would need to be at their best to keep up the pace with MK Athletic and TFA Lions at the top end of the table.
The first half started slowly, but burst into life after 8 minutes when Spartak had their best play thus far. There was good work from Luke N down left before Ethan got the ball into the box where Dylan turned the defender but his shot hit the side netting.
This attack spurred Galaxy on and just 4 minutes later Linslade opened the scoring. It started with good work from Ethan and he passed to Mali on the right side of the box. Mali then got to the byline and crossed for Dylan to fire home from 4 yards.
MK looked neat and tidy without being threatening. Meanwhile their defence showed some frailties under the Galaxy press. Midway through the first half the away side were again given no space and Luke W stole the ball, strode forward and fired a 20 yard effort a little wide.
Spartak knew that they had to make the most of the possession they were enjoying and were very pleased to double their lead from a corner from the right. The goalkeeper could not grab the ball and it fell to Luke W for a tap in.
As the first half drew to a close Galaxy had a fine team move with Elliot and Joseph doing well down the left. The pass came through to Jack R in the box. He managed to get his shot away but the away goalie had closed him down well to smother the chance.
Then Spartan had a corner that Spartak just about dealt with to end the half with a hard fought two goal lead. There was still the prospect of plenty to deal with in the second half as the away team, whilst not generating any shots, looked sharp in the attacking third.
It was MK who started the second half the stronger of the two teams and nearly scored when the ball flashed across the goal. Then a few minutes later a long ball cut the Galaxy defence and the striker lobbed the ball over Thomas to cut the deficit to 2-1.
However, just as Gallacticos were looking the more likely to score, Ethan's pressing got him the ball. He poked past the last defender and then fired into the goal to regain Spartak's two goal advantage and, as it transpired, take the wind from Gallacticos' sails. For the remainder of the game it returned to its former pattern with Spartak showing some great attacking moves and MK offering little in the final third with Cealan and Jack J proving to be a very solid back line.
As for Galaxy's attacks there was another good team move after 26 minutes. Jack R did particularly well on the right to retain position and pass to Dylan. He fed Luke N, whose 20 yard effort hit the crossbar.
Spartak managed to score two goals in the final three minutes to round off a great performance. Firstly, MK let the ball bounce in the box and Jack R was on hand to absolutely smash the ball home and make the score 4-1. And then, in the last minute, there was more pressing from Galaxy. Luke W won the ball and it eventually fell to Tycho who smashed home from 18 yards.
It was great to see five different goal scorers and this result keeps Spartak very much in the hunt for a top two finish. The next two matches against MK Athletic and TFA Lions will be pivotal in deciding Spartak's season as the league season reaches a dramatic stage!
