MKDDL U16 Division 2

Moretonville Junior Hurricanes 2 - 3 Linslade Galaxy Boca Juniors

This was the first game for Boca since 3rd December and before that 19th November. The weather, plus teams pulling out, has conspired against Boca this winter and despite some monsoon conditions, Galaxy were determined to play this game. The game was scheduled to be away, at Moretonville, but the Hurricanes pitch is notoriously boggy, so it wasn't a surprise that the fixture had to be reversed and played at Cedars. The Cedars pitch was slightly soft but in reasonable condition at the beginning of the game.

Boca started really slowly. Bottom of the league Hurricanes were clearly highly motivated for this game. They were a physical team, they played direct football into a front two and pressed Boca back, not allowing Boca to play out from the back. The soft and sticky pitch did not lend itself to passing football but Boca were also off the pace and sloppy with their distribution when they did get on the ball.

Hurricanes managed to keep Boca pinned back in their own half and started to create some dangerous moments. Their forward was dropping deep and getting in between the Boca midfield and attack. Hurricanes were finding it too easy to dribble through the Boca defence and Boca were having to resort to some last stitch defending and some missed chances by Hurricanes.

The first goal came from one of these Hurricanes attacks through the middle of the pitch. Boca half cleared the ball out to the Hurricanes left but the ball was whipped back into the box. Harry Shore slid in at the far post to try and intercept the cross but ended up volleying the ball into the left side of the goal, 0-1.

Hurricanes continued to apply further pressure. Another attack ended with the Moretonville centre forward smashing his shot towards the roof of the Boca net, from the left side of the penalty area. Boca goalie, Dan Ingram, made a wonderful finger tip save, diving to his right and tipping the ball over the bar.

Against the run of play, Boca played a long ball in behind the Moretonville defence. Zach Theodorou was on to it in a heart beat, he took a touch and then slotted his finish low past the Moretonville keeper, 1-1.

The conditions had really deteriorated, Boca were playing into the wind but the rain was now lashing down and was making the pitch very slippy and sticky. Boca had now changed their shape slightly, now playing with three in central midfield to try and get a foot hold in the game. This meant that Boca were now less under pressure at the back but they were still trying to play out from the back, which was not working in the poor conditions.

Late in the half, Moretonville won a corner. The delivery from the right was weak. It barely got off the ground but somehow managed to evade everyone and reached the far side of the 6 yard box. The ball bounced off the Moretonville forwards shin and bobbled towards the Galaxy goal. Ben Stunell stuck out a foot but only succeeded in poking the ball under Dan, as it slowly rolled across the goal line, 1-2.

Just before half time, Boca earned a free kick 10 yards from the edge of the Hurricanes box. Tom Alexander stepped up and hit a dipping effort which narrowly went over the top left corner of the goal.

Boca came out for the second half with a renewed intent and a game plan to play more direct, as a result of the conditions. The rain continued to lash down, the boys were all soaked to their skins and the pitch was now a mud bath.

Boca immediately started to get in behind the Hurricanes defence, Bobby Forsythe was having a fantastic game down the Boca right and was now getting forward and creating opportunties for Zach upfront. A direct attack and a great through ball put Zach through on goal. Zach took his shot early and from the edge of the area he fired his finish into the bottom right corner, 2-2.

Boca were now on top, Moretonville were limited to very few chances, with their best chance coming from a freekick which they tamely rolled into the hands of Dan in the Boca goal.

A corner midway through the half, was swung in to the near post by Callum Scott. The Moretonville goalie, in awful conditions, tried to catch the ball but it slipped out of his hands, went through his legs and crossed the goal line, 3-2.

Boca battled through the last part of the game, there was little football played as players struggled to keep their feet and tackles increasingly became messy. The game was almost entirely played in midfield, with the Boca players winning their battles and then looking to play balls forward as quickly as possible. The effort that both teams had put in was incredible, this combined with the close score line and the conditions meant that tempers were running high but the referee did a fantastic job of keeping control.

It was a great comeback win for Boca. They had started slowly, not played well, the conditions were terrible, the pitch was a mud bath but the Boca boys battled hard and earned an important 3 points.

Player of the Match went to 2 players. Zach, for his 2 goals and his great performance on a difficult day and also Ano Parwaringira who was outstanding at right back, he wasn't ever beaten, he battled for everything, he looked to play forward quickly and linked up well with Bobby down the right.

Another home game against Tattenhoe Youth Pumas next week, let's hope the weather is dryer and the pitches recover in time.
