MKDDL U16 Division 2
Linslade Galaxy U16 Boca Juniors 5 - 2 Bedford Park Rangers U16 Lions
It was a warm and drizzly morning. The Cedars pitch was in poor condition, with the centre of the pitch quite cut up and with very little grass on it. League leaders, Boca were playing a title deciding game against second placed Bedford Park Rangers Lions. Boca knew that a win would take them 15 points clear at the top of the table with Lions then having 5 games to play and given Boca's impressive goal difference, league champions bar the shouting!
Boca started the game strongly, they immediately created a couple of early chances with some great work by Louis Woodford, Jacob Thomas and Tom Alexander down the right, the ball was then switched across the pitch through Callum Scott in the middle and ended up with Bobby Forsythe down the left, Bobby shifted inside onto his right foot but lifted his effort over the bar. In a second, very similar attack, Callum & Zach Theodorou linked up and again found Bobby cutting in from the left. This time Bobby's shot curled wide of the right post but it was a great start.
From the earlier game this season, Boca had learned that Bedford like to lump long balls from their centre-back and try to hit their quick attackers early. One such ball was played over the Boca defence, Boca attempted to clear but the ball ended up with the Bedford forward who lobbed his finish over Dan Ingram, in goal, and into the net, 0-1.
Boca were not phased by this early blow, they immediately got back into their stride and started to create attacks. Ivan Pastoe was having another great game at left back, his speed and physical strength were too much for Bedford and he was starting to build attacks from left back. Boca won a free kick on the left side of the pitch, on halfway. Callum took the freekick, playing the ball towards Bobby down the left. Bedford won the ball but only managed to clear as far as Ivan. Ivan drove towards the penalty area and played a 1-2 with Zach on the edge of the area. The return ball flicked up in the air and Ivan met it on the volley, with an outside of the boot (Trivela) finish, which crashed in off the underside of the cross bar, 1-1.
Very soon after, Boca created another great attack down the right. This time Jacob, Louis and Zach linked up, with Zach firing a low cross from the byline, straight across the 6 yard box. Bobby burst into the box and from around 2 yards out, scored off the underside of the cross bar, as the ball had bobbled up infront of him, 2-1.
Another long ball forward from Bedford, led to a 1v1 between Dan and the Bedford forward, on the left side of the Boca area. Dan got out early and made himself big and all the Bedford forward could do was try to knick the ball around Dan from a tight angle. Ivan had got back and made sure the ball went out of play but Dan unintentionally collided with the Bedford forward, as he tried to get out of the way. The ref pointed to the spot and Boca had to accept an undeserved penalty, which was neatly converted by the Bedford forward, 2-2.
From this point of the game onwards Boca were completely dominant. Boca were first to every header, they worked harder than Bedford and kept possession much better than Bedford, despite the tough pitch. Boca tried to use the width of the pitch where there was more grass to play on and Bedford were torn apart when Boca managed to move the ball or switch the play.
Before half time, Boca managed to grab a deserved 3rd goal. Another good move down the left involving Callum, Ivan and Joe Carr was at first stopped by Bedford. Boca were quick to counterpress and won the ball back high up the pitch. Ivan played the ball quickly into Joe, who hit a first time left foot cross into the middle of the Box, picking out Zach. Zach hit a first time left foot finish which squeezed under the Bedford goalie and into the net, 3-2.
The second half started as the first half had ended, with Boca now dominating possession and territory on the pitch. Bedford were pinned back into their half but still resorted to long ball for their attacks, which were easily dealt with by Harry Shore, Will Gibson or Ben Stunell at centre half, who now had the measure of the Bedford attack.
Ano Parwaringira and Jacob were now linking up beautifully down the Boca right, Ano was overlapping Jacob and driving into the Bedford area or playing in Jacob for him to create crossing opportunties. Down the left, Joe was linking up with Tom, Will and Zach. From one attack, a cross came in from the Boca right, Zach hit the left post and Callum was able pass the ball home at the second attempt. Unfortunately, Callum was in an offside position when Zach hit his shot and the goal was disallowed.
Eventually, the 4th goal arrived. A neat bit of interplay and then a pass from Zach through to Louis, who guided the ball home, 4-2.
This 4th goal took any remaining tension out of the game and Boca were now camped in the Bedford half. Zach received the ball down the Boca left, he turned his marker, cut inside another defender and then slotted his finish into the Bedford goal, 5-2. The game just wouldn't have been the same without a Zach individual goal.
Tom did have the ball in the net another time for Boca, when he sprinted clear of the defence, rounded the goalie and finished from what seemed like an impossible angle but the ref had blown up for a foul earlier in the move and hadn't played the advantage.
It was an outstanding performance by the whole Galaxy team. All 15 boys were fantastic and any one of them could have been Gartec Player of the Match. The award went to Ivan, as he was unstoppable and Bedford did not know how to play against him.
With just 4 games to play, Boca now have their sites set on an unbeaten league season.
