MKDDL U16 Division 2
Bedford Park Rangers U16 Lions 5 - 6 Linslade Galaxy U16 Boca Juniors
Having only played 3 games in 3 months, Boca were back in business in a first vs second match, away, against Bedford Park Rangers Lions. It was a mild, dry and overcast day and the Mowsbury Park pitch was in reasonable condition.
Galaxy started the game slowly, the first 5 minutes was all BPR who were clearly highly motivated for this important 6 pointer. Boca couldn't connect their passes and were pinned back by BPR. Just as Boca started to find some rhythm, Lions managed to grab an opening goal. Boca had not cleared the box from a cross and a deflected effort ended up in the back of the Boca net, 0-1.
Boca replied immediately, Ano Parwaringira started the game superbly at right back and combined beautifully with Bobby Forsythe down the right wing. Boca switched the play across to the left and then played into the box, the pass was cut out by the Lions defender but Zach Theodorou was straight on his touch. Zach won the ball and the poked his finish past the Lions goalie, 1-1.
This goal sparked Galaxy into life. Soon after, they won a corner which was expertly whipped in by Callum Scott from the right. The dangerous ball was met by Harry Shore in the middle of the BPR 6 yard box and he nodded home, 2-1.
Galaxy were now in full flow, playing some great football and creating chances. An attack down the Boca left ended with a loose pass to the Lions centre half. The Lions defender slipped, Zach pounced on this, flashed past the defender, rounded the goalie, slightly left the ball behind him but then spun and coolly passed his finish into the Lions open goal, 3-1.
Boca controlled the game through to half time. They created a few good chances and didn't really allow BPR to progress forward. Every time BPR got possession Boca were aggressive, winning the ball back within 5 to 10 seconds. It was one of the best 30 mins of football of the season from Boca.
Half time suited BPR, they managed to reset themselves and came out fighting again. Boca still looked in control of the game but BPR were now getting forward a bit more but without creating good shooting chances. In one such attack, the ball broke loose to Lions No.11 around 25 yards out from goal. Boca were slow to close down the forward, he set himself and then struck an unstoppable curling shot into the roof of the Galaxy net, a worldie finish, 3-2.
As they did at the beginning of the game, Boca responded immediately with an intense period of pressure. Louis Woodford lofted a great pass over the top of the Lions defence and straight into the path of flying machine, Zach. Zach eased clear of the Lions defence, stopped and then calmly lobbed his finish over the stranded Lions goalie for his hattrick, 4-2.
A few Boca attacks later, Jacob Thomas broke away down the Boca right. He cut into the area and then unselfishly squared the ball to Zach, who tucked his finish low past the goalie, close to the near post. 4 more goals for Zach, taking him to 30 goals for the season, 5-2.
Galaxy were now coasting and started to play some good passing football across the midfield and out to the left and right. At this stage, it looked like Boca would go on to win comfortably.
A long ball forward from Lions was not dealt with by the Boca defence. The ball broke again to the BPR No.11 and he finished past the Boca goalie into the bottom right corner. A shock goal from nothing and suddenly some hope for BPR, 5-3.
Galaxy got back on the attack again and earned a corner. A mix up in communication meant that Boca had only left 1 defender back, the Boca corner was cleared and the Lions No. 18 forward was first to react. The forward broke away, with Jacob in pursuit. Jacob caught up with the No.18 but he cut back inside. Jacob managed to get back across to the Lions forward and put in a superb tackle, winning the ball cleanly. Inexplicably, the ref pointed to the spot. BPR converted the penalty and the game was now very much on, 5-4.
With their tales up, BPR started to throw long balls forward to their quick attackers. One of these long balls, was again not dealt with well by the Boca defence and BPR were first to react, bundling the ball in the net, 5-5!
The last few minutes of the game were frenetic, Boca were trying to regain their composure and build some attacks and BPR were continuing to play their direct attacking style to complete their astonishing comeback. Some great build up play down the Boca right, ended up with Jacob linking up with Ano down the right side of the penalty area. Ano played a neat 1-2 with Jacob, overlapped him and then Ano drove into the Lions penalty box. Ano used his pace and power to beat two defenders and then cut the ball back to Bobby, at the near post. Bobby swiveled and tucked his first time finish between the goalie and the near post, Boca were back in the lead, 6-5.
Boca just had to see out the dying minutes. With the final attack of the game, BPR again launched the ball forward. Ano went up for the header, he was clearly pushed in the back and as a result the ball struck his arm. Instead of a freekick to Boca, the ref awarded a freekick to BPR, 20 yards out and directly in the centre of the goal. The Lions No.11, who had already bagged a hat trick in the game, stepped up but sent his effort high over the bar. The ref blew the final whistle and Boca had won a tense, heart stopping encounter!
With this victory, Boca have now extended their 100% league record to 8 games and they sit at the top of the table, 8 points clear of BPR with a game in hand.
A number of Boca players had great games. Bobby, Callum, Harry and Ben were superb but Ano and Zach were outstanding. Ano was quick, powerful and tireless at right back but the Gartec Player of the Match award had to again go to Zach. Not only for his 4 goals but for his work rate, general play and relentless pressing off the ball.
Another week off for Boca next week before a good run of fixtures up to Easter.
