Seven goals away at AFC Oakley secures Boca another 3 points

(Many thanks to Rob Lane for the match report)

MKDDL Division 2
AFC Oakley Vipers 3-7 Linslade Galaxy Boca Juniors

It was a mild, dry and calm Saturday morning. Boca were scheduled away but the game was played at Cedars, as a result of Boca's home fixture being reversed earlier in the season. The grass on the Cedars pitch was long but the early morning mist & dew helped the ball to slide in the first half. Boca were returning following a 3 week break over Easter and were playing their first game as newly crowned league champions.

Boca looked a little rusty following the holidays. They started the game a little scrappy and couldn't get into a flowing passing rhythm. Despite this, Boca scored early when Zach Theodorou was slid through. The outrushing Vipers goalie misjudged the through ball and Zach was able to slot the ball into an empty net, 1-0.

Very quickly after Zach was through on goal again. This time getting between two defenders and passing his finish into the bottom right corner, 2-0.

A few minutes later Zach completed his hat trick. Jack Welchman demanded the ball in the middle of the pitch, he Cruff turned and threaded a beautiful pass to Louis Woodford, Louis turned and played Zach in behind. Again, Zach raced past the Oakley defence and again he finished clinically, 3-0.

Oakley then won a free kick around 30 yards out from goal. Their midfielder stepped up and arrowed his finish into the top right corner of the goal, it was unstoppable, 3-1.

Soon after, Dan Ingram pulled off a fantastic save with his legs as the Oakley forward was clean through and looked certain to score. Boca were ahead in the game but Oakley weren't giving up. Oakley had some strong, quick and aggressive attackers, Boca were not as sharp with their passing as normal and gave the ball away a few times in their own final third.

Ben Stunell brought the ball out from the back and played a long through ball behind the Oakley defence, Zach was again first to the ball. He rounded the keeper and went slightly wide out to the right side of the area. Zach smashed his finish towards the bottom left corner of the goal and all the Oakley defender could do was turn the ball into his own net as he ran back. The ball was clearly heading in, so this was definitely Zach's goal, his 4th of the game and 45th goal of the season, 4-1.

Boca then put together a good passing move down the right side of the pitch. A chipped pass down the middle of the pitch was plucked out of the air by Zach, Zach played a square pass to Callum Scott and Callum finished with his left foot into the far right corner of the goal, 5-1.

In the second half, Oakley were much more aggressive and started to push Boca back. Boca were now starting to show signs of how they had played before the Easter break, passing their way out of the press and then breaking up the pitch.

A slick move down, involving a switch of play from right to left, found Jacob Thomas on the left side of the pitch. Jacob drove into the centre of the pitch and then laid the ball off to Joe Carr, who was arriving to his right. Joe took one touch to set himself and then fired the ball from around 20 yards into the roof of the Vipers net, a sensational goal, 6-1.

Boca were struggling to contain the aggressive Oakley attack and Oakley now began a period of sustained pressure. Dan Ingram pulled off a series of great saves, two from 1v1 situations and one following a scramble in the area. Oakley did eventually make this pressure tell when they converted a chance from the left side of the area, 6-2.

This goal sparked Boca back into life and Boca began to play some of their best football, with good flowing moves down the right & left side, switches of play and a number of crosses into the box. Boca missed a few good chances but eventually capitalised on their good play from a corner. Callum swung a deep cross to the far post, Ivan Pastore put the defender under pressure and the ball dropped to Louis at the far post, who squeezed his finish through a tight gap, 7-2.

Oakley continued to be aggressive and managed to grab another late goal to make the final score, 7-3.

It was a good result for Boca and a good game to help Boca get back into their stride again. Player of the Match was Dan Ingram who was fantastic between the sticks. Dan made a string of impressive saves when Oakley were really pilling on the pressure in the second half, Dan also distributed the ball well and looked sharp all game.

Boca now play their final two games in the next 7 days. First up is a long midweek trip to Moretonville Wanderers, which will be a logistical challenge for parents and players after school on Wednesday. Boca then finish their season at home against Tattenhoe Youth Pumas on Saturday.
