(Many thanks to coach, John, for the match report)
A game that felt like a cup final – well done Spartans!
Second to last game of the season, against an unbeaten Bedford Park Rangers Eagles (BPR), was always going to be a tough game with both teams being on top form throughout the season. A ‘cup final’ game seen Roma give it their all with George converting a hattrick, Joe making some top quality saves, and getting a hand to a blinding shot from BPR that went in the roof of the net. We kept the pressure on in the second quarter with Frank, Charlie and William stringing together some great passes and getting shots on target – unfortunately none that converted. In the last minute, BPR broke through our defence, Joe came charging out and got his body on the ball, a tough BPR striker went through our keeper, the ball broke loose and they were able to scramble a goal.
The halftime talk was straight to the point, keep doing what you’re doing, use the width of the pitch and play the ball towards the penalty spot. Our boys done just that and Oliver converted 2 goals, his second was an absolute beauty. Caine was unfortunate not to get on the score sheet when George played the ball square, hit well, Caine narrowly missed the post. Final quarter, and everything to play for - BPR kept the pressure on for a good 7 minutes and we couldn’t get out of our own half, a handball just outside the box seen Bedford smash the ball into the top corner, nothing the defence could have done to stop it. The pressure remained on, BPR number 9 hit the ball from outside of the box, George cleared with a header but it went straight back to the striker, hit again towards the righthand side of the goal, Dom then headed away - phew. Drilled well on pressing the ball, we broke quickly, Charlie played the ball up the line, George took a touch, thought about his options and smashed it past the keeper. The final whistle went and our Spartans were smiling ear-to-ear. What a game – well done team.
