U9 BARCA IN CLOSE DERBY MATCH AGAINST LEIGHTON UNITED

Olly and George B’s confident displays earns them player of the match award.

(Many thanks to Coach, Rich, for the match report)

It was an early start for Barca U9 as they faced Leighton United away for a derby match that didn't disappoint.

Both teams had just 8 players available which meant everyone was able to enjoy plenty of football. The game was a close battle from start to finish.

Barca were well switched on from the whistle. Some quality passing between the forward three of Olly, Amber and Heidi created some early chances. The two Georges were solid in defence, with George B in particular intercepting and clearing nearly every United attack. A confident display that earned him one of the two player of the match awards.

Despite feeling under the weather, Leo still managed to put in his usual high energy performance, trying a stint upfront and on the right wing before moving to centre mid – a position he adapted to well in the closing stages of the game.

Alex, once again showed his excellent athleticism, working hard up and down the pitch, breaking up United's advances and moving the ball forward quickly.

Barca's positional play was good with Amber and Heidi working the wings well, and moving into more central positions when play was down either side of the pitch. This paid off when Heidi latched onto a long throw from Amber to calmly slot the ball into the back of the net. United had some very skilful individuals and at times Barca rushed into tackles too quickly allowing the United players to skip past them a little too easily. This continued to cause Barca problems and Tyler was called upon a number of times, pulling off some wonderful saves. Whilst he wasn't able to keep out every shot, his heroic efforts kept the game a thrilling encounter to the very end.

Olly came close on a number of occasions and was a constant threat throughout the game. At times his powerful shot was simply too powerful for the size of the pitch. His fantastic link up play with the wingers and confident display in defence when called upon earned him a second player of the match award.

Barca can be really proud of their performance – the away team coach even stated after the game "We haven't had a close game like that in a long time!"
